Stretching
Description
This is NOT your typical fad stretching! The Mattes Method of Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) originated in the late 1970s, developed by Aaron L. Mattes, a kinesiotherapist and licensed massage therapist. Aaron Mattes began formulating and refining the method while working with athletes and rehabilitation clients who needed a safer, more effective way to restore flexibility and joint mobility without the drawbacks of traditional long-duration static stretching. He officially introduced his work through publications and workshops in the 1980s, with his first major book, Active Isolated Stretching: The Mattes Method, released in the early 1990s. Since then, AIS has been widely adopted by: Physical therapists Massage and sports therapists Athletic trainers Corrective exercise specialists Rehabilitation professionals Today, it’s considered one of the most effective systems for improving flexibility and neuromuscular efficiency — and its principles of gentle repetition, reciprocal inhibition, and awareness-based movement.
